I am FOR you NOT against YOU.......

Second Shooters this is for you.....Hell even if you have just assisted me, this is for you....

OK, see the image below.... I DID NOT TAKE THIS SHOT...... I love it, I took a different angle of it but this one is not mine... This Image by Copyright standards belongs to Andrea Henderson of Khapture Photography.  Pretty awesome huh! Well you may never see this image due to the fact that most photographers will not allow second shooters to post the images they shot except maybe for their website. We all know social media such as Facebook and Instagram is where we spend most of our time browsing for images or what not. So unless you know the photographer, its gonna be a slim chance you don't get to see their best work.

So I was blessed to be able to show most of my work to Instagram or FB when I would second shoot for a few local photographers, some yea NOT SO MUCH.

Here is another from  Amber Balous who also helps second shoot with me. I think I was taking pics of some details or maybe a different angle but this here, yea! Awesome 👏🏼

I guess my post is mainly about just letting future shooters know that it does not matter to me that you post what YOU shot.  After all its YOUR shot and your shooting with me for a reason... I like your stuff and I hope you get as much work in the future off of it as you can...

My Pastor at Shoreline City in Dallas just spoke about this just this Sunday. He stated that, How can I hold onto something that I have been blessed with and not pass it down. How can I ask them to help me shoot but limit them in return? The Lord blessed me with the opportunity to have a couple allow me to photograph their wedding or event and in my contract it states that I can post images from said event on social media, but yet I'm going to limit my second shooter and say "Hey by the way, you can't post any image you took till 3 months after I have given the couple their images". WHAT!
You know we have different angles and focal lengths we shoot at so more than likely your not gonna get the same shot I just took.  To my clients, I couldn't be everywhere at the same time and you know I didn't take the same first dance from all angles at the same time. I had help. Its hard to get work doing something creative, so if you see your face on someone else IG or FB page, its ok I know about it.... 80-90% of the images are coming from me. The editing....yup me.

Lisa Cheng Photography

Lisa Cheng Photography

So I would just like to say thanks for all the help and anyone who extended help when I needed it. I didn't pull up too many images from all the Photographers who have ever helped me but if you have helped me.....I want to see you post YOUR work...You don't have to say you got the image shooting with me, because that didn't matter just post it.

Second Shooter Angle

Second Shooter Angle

So again, I am for you, not against you. Not I am for me and only me.  I don't do it all alone and the people that help me should not be asked to have to limit their work to 1 or 2 post months later to show their work.  You were blessed, bless someone else. It's ok. The client is gonna love their whole gallery regardless.

Labor of Love

So Happy Labor Day everyone!

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

I just wanted to share MY contribution to this movement and what I bring. My Labor of Love if you will. The camera! The Image! Yesterday I got to hang out with some really close friends and for me some of them was my first time meeting them, but through social media and the interweb we were able to get to know each other way before we met yesterday in person. We had a "shootout" which is basically a styled shoot with models and we in the simplest terms become the paparazzi!!! Hahahahaha, well it felt that way! Only with lighting equipment everywhere if your not just a natural light photographer and nature to deal with.

Attack!!! 😂😂😂

Attack!!! 😂😂😂

To get to the spot I rather have attended a cross fit gym and spent 2 hours there. Yea, that would have been easier. Oh mental note. Get an assistant for stuff like this!

There have been many people before me with way more important contributions to our county and society that have made this day possible for you and me to enjoy a day off but this is part of mine. The gift that I have been given. The gift of creativity.

Here is an image of one of our models   Taylor, a big shout out to her and fighting the trek, heat, mosquitos, snakes, and turantulas, and worst of all. Us damn photographers lol.

What!!!!

So doing shoots like this is a blessing and a curse. A blessing, because you get to meet some pretty awesome people and get to show a few things that your capable of. Using and controlling natural light, use different lighting, and my favorite! Helping others get to their next level of offer some insight as to why I shot something a certain way. Our beautiful Mom Jacky below was game for anything! Getting in the water was a must! With the heat and the cool water I just had to follow along! Mental note number ✌🏼️.

3 Ladies and a Camera

I don't always post about personal things, but just wanted to share a couple of images from yesterday of the women in my life and the reason I picked up a camera.

See capturing those two young girls on the left playing soccer every Saturday about 9 years ago with my little point and shoot Kodak, yes I said point and shoot. Best of all I actually walked around the huge soccer fields with a monopod on it just like the big boys I waned to be like, Neil Leifer, Walter Looss, Brad Margin & Peter Read Miller.

Hit play and check out some of my handy work from 2007-Present.

Man......so yes looking at the video, its been a while I've been doing this.  I know the Lord has me where I'm suppose to be and Im fine with that.  I started doing my transition from "sports photographer" to event photographer when the girls I coached at the time were turning 15, and you already know what that means Quinceanera!  So it was like "coach you take pictures, do you want to be a sponsor to my quince as the photographer?"

By then I had moved up to shooting with a Sony A100 with a kit lens & a flash. So naturally I was like yes!  Below is one of my first images from a session for a quinceanera back in 2007. Man I had no clue what I was doing! Some would argue I still don't and that may be true but hustle always out does talent when talent doesn't hustle so I hustled my @ss off.

2007 Quinceanera

2007 Quinceanera

So I have a lot to be thankful for. The ladies in the first pic are the main reason Im thankful.  For allowing me to document their life and by giving me a life that allows me to do what I love doing.  So there is a small glimpse as to where and how I started photography.

By the way y'all keep checking in and don't forget to go back and hit the two most powerful buttons IN THE WHOLE WORLD. LIKE & SHARE

I'll be looking to do a free session and for my 1K follower I'll be having a drawing for a complimentary wedding! YES A WHOLE WEDDING ON ME!

Stay tuned!

Taking vs Making

So you hear it all the time. That I'm a photographer and I "take pictures".

Well to an extent yes, I take pictures of moments that are happening but I also go in knowing I have to create (Make) some 🔥.

Back in February I wrote how you have to create mood and drama rather than just taking a snap shot.  Well part making an image is that your faced with shooting in a location that is not pleasing to the 👀 eyes!

Dont get me wrong it's a fine hotel but there is just to much stuff going on. You got exit signs in the background, rest rooms, funky wall art. Not to mention people walking by.

Take this shot for example.

Photo Cred: Alejandro Duran

Photo Cred: Alejandro Duran

I "took" the picture in a hallway of a Marriott after the food was served and people had cleaned up the buffet tables. So I decided to grab the quinceañera's shoes, since she had taken them off into something more comfortable so she could dance.

I had looked around and it is what it is. It's a hotel ballroom. Tungsten lighting (all the orange glow) and well you see it.

So I grab my flash and know exactly what I want to do. I want to get rid of all the stuff going on an have the focus on the shoes!

😳 BAM!! There you go! Made something out of nothing! No photoshop tricks this is all done in camera. Which means I have to edit less!

Here is another example of making something out of nothing.

Hotel window natural light

Hotel window natural light

Wide open window, letting in tons of natural light. Good right? Well the shocking look the groom gives you when you tell him your going to close the shades and turn off the lights. 😳

the result.........

Now let's go get some lunch!! Love y'all!

Do I NEED a Second Shooter?

victorescandonweddings

So do you need a second shooter? Well that depends on who you ask? Ask a bride on a budget and they will tell you, no its not needed. Ask a prima donna photographer and they will tell you they can cover everything and no, they don't need one either. Ask a guy that is needing work and trying to build a portfolio and they will tell you yes, of course you need one.

Ask me a while back, and I would of told you yes, yes you need one. Why? Well because I was the last guy I just mentioned. I was the guy struggling to get bookings and stuff to show. I was the guy still learning how the flow of a wedding went down. I didn't matter how many tutorials I watched, It didn't matter how many YouTube videos I stayed up till 3 in the morning watching.

Its not the same as going out there and shooting.

Do I still second shoot? Of course I do and I love it. Why? Well because I know the main photographer can depend on me to get the shots they don't always get. There are a handful of well know photographers that work as a team that have acted as second shooters some way such as Lin & Jirsa in California,  TWO MANN Studios, who is a husband and wife team made up of Lanny Mann & Erika Mann out of Canada, There is Easton & Laura Reynolds who make up LuRey Photography, and Ben & Erin Chrisman who make up CHRISMAN Studios. Even Well know Jasmine Star who brands herself as a solo photographer has her husband JD for a second shooter. These are all well respected Wedding Photographers that work as a creative team to give the Bride and Groom the best experience they can give.

The Key word is CREATIVE TEAM. Throwing ideas back and forth, asking what works and what doesn't, challenging each other to get "THE SHOT", pushing for something better, something different.

What is a good reason a bride can relate to needing a second shooter? Well how about letting moments go by. Moments that were caught but maybe from one angle or it was caught but an iPad was sticking out in the isle as the bride and groom had their first kiss we've all seen that photo of the groom leaning over to see his bride because of all the cell phones. We can't control every situation and we can't be in all places at one time. Trust me, Ive tried!

The image above of Will dancing with his mother is a great shot and shows the joy and love he is feeling on his wedding day. I captured that! I mean look at his smile. Its end to end! Badass if you ask me! I love it, Im calling my mom right after this. (Not really its late but shout out to my Mom!)
Ok, one thing is missing. What in the world is his mother feeling at that very moment? Is she crying? Is she sad? Is she as happy as he is? Well take a look below.

victorescandonweddings

That shot above would not have been captured if it wasn't for my second shooter. I mean I got the shot of the groom but doesn't having the photo of his mom make it even more special. I think so. Talk to me years from know when they are 60 and tell me it don't mean anything.

SO, the image below..........

victorescandonweddings
Victor Escandon Wedding

We only got two pictures of this lady. She sat down most of the night. I captured both of these second shooting for a great photographer friend of mine Rick Davila. He didn't catch her and if you know Rick you know he don't miss many moments.
This is the grooms aunt. He was so happy we caught these!! Unfortunately, she passed away that Monday morning. Thats right, two days later!
The top image is during the dollar dance where generally the main photographer will cover the bride and second will cover the groom, and the bottom image is of her son and her dancing. They danced one song and stayed on one side of the dance floor which at the time I was covering.

Do what you need to but please think about it really hard when you pass up a second shooter opportunity. Maybe you can cut back on something else? The limo or on the food, a cheaper cake, but don't miss out on the opportunity of coming up short on moments. After all, we can only be in so many places at one time.
If your reading this and you second shoot, please don't take second shooting lightly.  The images you capture may be so much more meaningful come that Monday morning.

So What do I Get?

A lot of times people purchase things or are about to purchase something and if your like me you scroll down to the details and click on the "What's In The Box" section. All in hopes of getting more than we purchased. That little nugget that makes you grin inside and appreciate the purchase more. It's not a make or break deal because you really liked the product or company maybe even the customer service was second to none so buying it was already a must.

Victor! What's your point? Ok, I was looking at some photos that I took of an event and at the time I took the pictures I looked at the back of my camera and knew right off the bat it was missing something. Said picture is below.

image.jpg

Ok, so not bad. So Vic what's all this talk about added value?

Well I decided to reach in my bag and pull out a few things and walked back over to my table setting I was shooting. Had a buddy do a few things, set up and extra flash with a gel to add some pop to the scene. As you can tell from the above picture this particular spot had no up lighting so....... I created some.

Behind The Scene Shot

Behind The Scene Shot

Here, with some good help I am creating a smoke effect so the colored light pops against the image. Below is a shot I was more happy with more creative and I know some people would not have taken the extra steps to create said shot!

Thanks to everyone who books with me and has booked me for your Wedding Day and Quinceañera. I learned a while ago that I have to STOP SELLING and START HELPING!

The free resources like timelines and questionnaires are part of what I don't talk about but include. The referrals I send your way if I'm booked to make sure you are taken care of are some of the small things that me as a person is also looking for when it comes to buying something.  #AddedValue

Faith, Hope & Love.....LOVE is the greatest of these.

image.jpg

I'm coming up on 17 years that I almost  lost my soulmate that I've known for 26 years! Nine years after meeting and getting married to my wife, it's 1999 and Melinda is pregnant and we are at home enjoying a Saturday morning. Typical Saturday watching TV not wanting to get out of bed. Melinda says to me she has a headache. Little did I know that headache would change my life.......Back in a moment.

Fast forward to 2015 and I'm helping cover a Quinceañera with a buddy of mine. Mariachis are playing in the background and Mom just starts unloading these powerful notes to her daughter. I'm capturing the moments as they unfold.  If you haven't heard Hermoso Cariño, google it. Heck I'll google it for you. Link here

Ok, see what I'm talking about! Wow!

So the back story to this was that when Mom was in the delivery room...........she passed away! Died! For 25 minutes, nothing. Only to be standing in front of her daughter during her 16th birthday celebration pouring her heart out. She had never sang in her life! No one in the room would know any better that she has never sang before. "I waited my whole life to sing to you" said Mom.

The LOVE a mother has for her babies is so strong it overcame the unimaginable.

LOVE!

For GOD so loved the world he sent his only son. We have seen it and read about it over and over.

Which is why this moment struck a cord with me. I too had to get ready to tell my soulmate goodbye........That headache I wrote about earlier was an artery that had knotted in my wife's brain. Scans showed it had hemorrhaged, say your goodbyes. I cried like a baby on my Dads shoulder. I was 22 years old. Losing my wife.

Story has it my wife told the good Lord, she wasn't ready to leave her babies and hubby just yet! HE LOVED her so much and LOVED us so much HE gave her back to us. We are going on 17 years and Lili is a Junior in High School. Me and my daughter Alexis are blessed they are still here with us.

LOVE. CAN DO AMAZING THINGS AND OVERCOME A LOT. THAT IS WHY IT IS THE GREATEST OF THESE............

I capture these moments! In an artful and creative way, I stop time for you. I know what they can mean to you one day when you may need them most.

Jonah 2:2

Saying, “I called out to the Lord, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice.

Melinda and I

It hasn't been an easy road, but we have each other and so to me.....I'm Blessed

Power in Failure

Failures are constantly on my mind. Thinking I could have always done better. Better in school, be a better son, husband, father, friend. Thinking I'm one failure away from working at a place I'm not happy at.

There is one thing I have learned.

FAILURE IS A GOOD THING!

Some of my failures are in a place in my mind that sometimes see a little light and try to get the better of me. I understand they have made me better. Every let down, every expectation not met. Daily the LORD blessed me closer to my dreams and creates separation from my failures.

If you are afraid of failure, you are afraid of LEARNING to get BETTER.
